East Hampton, one of the famous "Hamptons" is located on the south shore of Long Island, New York. It was named for the county in England. Settled in 1648, when the Dutch and English battled for control of the island. Evolved from agricultural community to wealthy enclave and artists colony in the 1800s. The main beach in East Hampton was ranked No. 8 on Dr. Beach's annual Top 10 Beaches list, 2002. Montauk Point, the most easterly point in New York is just a few miles to the east. A famous lighthouse is located there.
